A team of Bangladesh police crossed the border on Tuesday and entered a village in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district. They opened fire and dragged a man to their territory, a senior police officer said at CoochBehar in West Bengal today.

The Bangladesh police team crossed the border and entered Dighaltari village in Dinhata area of Cooch Behar district at around 12.30 am and raided the house of Mohammad Hassan Mian and his wife Noorjahan Bibi, Superintendent of Police D P Singh said.

Seeing the team, Mian tried to flee but they fired at him and then dragged him into Bangladesh territory, sources said.

Singh said the police have started a probe into the matter. It is still not clear to us why the Bangladesh police came here, opened fire and nabbed the man, he said.

Meanwhile, unofficial sources said that Mian had criminal records in Bangladesh and the Bangladesh police had failed to arrest him in their country.

Today, a flag meeting was held between Border Security Force and Bangladesh Rifles personnel, where the BSF termed the entry of Bangladesh police as illegal and protested the incident, according to the Deputy Inspector General -BSF (Cooch Behar Sector), V S Shikarwar.

The BDR assured the BSF that it would look into the matter.
