G-O-A-L. Every World Cup is known for goals and its scorers. Here is a selection of goals which will remain in our collective consciousness for many years to come.
Goalscorer: Nelson Cuevas of Paraguay.
Match info: Paraguay v Slovenia, group B, at the Seogwipo-Jeju World Cup
stadium, South Korea, on June 12.
Set up: Santa Cruz races down the middle from the half-way line and crosses
to Nelson Cuevas on the right flank. Cuevas shrugs off two defenders, darts
into the box and fires home, off the underside of the horizontal.
Goalscorer: Diego Forlan of Uruguay.
Match info: Uruguay v Senegal, group A, at the Suwon World Cup stadium,
South Korea, on June 11.
Set up: Uruguay win a free-kick on the right flank. Alvaro Recoba swings it
into the box. Bouba Diop wins the aerial duel, heads it to the top of the
box, on the left. Diego Forlan controls it and lets go a blistering volley
into the left corner of the net.
Goalscorer: Anders Svensson of Sweden.
Match info: Argentina v Sweden, group F, at the Miyagi stadium, Japan, on
June 12.
Set up: Sweden win a free-kick at the top of the box. Argentina form a wall.
Larsson and Svensson prepare to take the kick. Larsson steps up and baffles
everybody by running over the ball. Svensson follows immediately and curls
it into the net.
Goalscorer: Pauleta of Portugal.
Match info: Portugal v Poland, Group D, at the Jeonju World Cup stadium,
South Korea, on June 10.
Set up: Rui Costa advances from within his own half and races down the right
flank. Pauleta sprints from the middle to the left to receive Rui Costa's
cross. Pauleta takes a defender in his stride and slams home with a left
footer past a hapless Jerzy Dudek.
Goalscorer: Rivaldo of Brazil.
Match info: England v Brazil, quarter-final at the Shizuoka stadium Ecopa,
Japan, on June 21.
Set up: Beckham evades a tackle deep on the left flank of Brazil. Ronaldinho
collects the ball and moves up with a stunning burst of pace right down the
middle. He takes three defenders in his stride, feints a move to the left
and sells a dummy to Ashley Cole; lays the ball to his right onto the path
of Rivaldo, who slots it into the goal.
